We’re big fans of reclaiming the insults thrown in our direction as women, especially when we’re childfree, single, ageing (how dare we!)… Already proud hags, now it’s time for us to get fully witch-coded 🪄
We shot our latest portrait on a beach that houses the only known grave of a woman accused of witchcraft in Scotland. Roz told us all about Lilias Adie who died during interrogation, refusing to give up the names of those in her apparent coven. She was accused when illness amongst the residents of Torryburn sparked a brief but intense period of witch-hunting, with one local woman warning, “beware lest Lilias Adie come upon you and your child”.
As a childfree family social worker, Roz can relate to this kind of suspicion – and she was further demonised when she sought permanent birth control (you’ll be truly shocked to hear what one psychosexual counsellor told her!) But if living outside of the control of patriarchy and beyond the bounds of social acceptability makes us witches, then so be it! 🔮
We’ll leave you with these revolutionary words from Ani, who says that being childfree “affords me the space to properly care for my mind and body, to delve into my passions, and that is the best kind of rebellion. It’s a sacred thing, to truly know yourself and tend to yourself.”
Whether we’re considered sacred or profane, we’re with you all the way my witches! From your childfree coven leaders 🖤
