WE ARE CHILDFREE

β€œIt was ‘want to’ versus simply ‘have to’!”

Stuti, 31, India

I decided I wanted to be childfree around the time my partner and I announced our engagement.

Looking at my close relative’s experience of pregnancy and the delivery of her first child, I suddenly realised this was not what I wanted.

Up until then I had always assumed a to-do list for life: graduation, post-graduation, marriage, kids, and so on.

This was the very first time I recognised I had a choice, it was ‘want to’ versus simply ‘have to’!

The decision to be childfree has been liberating for us. Clarifying our boundaries with our Indian families has been important as we didn’t want others to have unrealistic expectations (from us).
