“While there is talk of ‘valuing diversity’ it is challenging feeling like only one kind of choice is valued.”

I work for a company that is both male-dominated and patriarchal. Employe benefits are centred around things like a kids club (free babysitting) and family fun days. While there is talk of ‘valuing diversity’ it is challenging feeling like only one kind of choice is valued.

It is a losing battle to bring it up even in the most diplomatic of ways, being made to feel like a grumpy bitter cat lady who doesn’t have kids.

What I would like is for my time to be valued as much (not more, just equally) as those with kids, and benefits be available at work that are diverse and not just for those with kids, e.g. being able to take time off to travel (or whatever else!), pet leave or benefits and discounts for pets, etc.

It’s frustrating feeling unseen and like advocating to be included is seen as ‘taking away’ from those with children, instead of just being more equal in society. I liken it to being single and going out for dinner with a couple and being expected to split the bill. It doesn’t make sense.
