“The climate is my main reason for being childfree.”

Emilie, 48, Denmark

The climate is my main reason for being childfree. I made the choice when I was only 7-8 years old, when I wished for a piece of rainforest from Greenpeace. No one really understood – they still don’t.

I was a ballet dancer as a kid, later I started traveling doing extreme sports. Not having kids allowed me to travel all over the world and later as journalist to places like Afghanistan where one does not know if they’ll come back alive.

I’ve had a very interesting life, done a lot of cool and wonderful things, and met people from all over the world learning from them.

I moved back to Denmark two years ago and here it’s hard to be without children. It’s lonely and I’ve never fit in here, not when I was younger and not now.

People leave me out, especially groups with other women – so I am mostly with men (like my
husband:-) or alone. I don’t have, never did have, the womens’ support.

But when it gets hard I think of Dolly Parton. She said the secret to a happy marriage is a good economy and no kids ;-)
