“I don’t know anyone my age who is childfree and often feel isolated.”

Celia, 61, UK

I am in my early 60s, happily married for 25+yrs and childfree.

Leaving school, many of my friends seemed to start families quite young. I think I was put off kids at that point. I married in my 20s and assumed I would fall pregnant but thankfully it never happened.

I followed my career, divorced and met my now-husband. Neither of us wanted kids and travel opportunities allowed us to see the world without hindrance.

My main problem now is avoiding conversations that constantly end up around the latest baby and grandparent duties. I don’t know anyone my age who is childfree and often feel isolated, especially at work (I still work a couple of days a week).

I try to keep busy with hobbies and workshops but never feel like I fit in. I just don’t want to talk about or am interested in babies and children!
