WE ARE CHILDFREE

“Being adopted made me hyper-aware of the impact of biological parent child bonds, for good or bad.”

Rae, 27, USA

I’m adopted.

People always think it’s the adoptee’s fault if adoptions don’t go well, but it’s the precarious nature of being removed from someone’s entire genetic identity.

Adoption is trauma and it took years for me to realize that. It’s made me realize how crucial parenting is and I am constantly hyper-aware of the impact of biological parent child bonds, for good or bad.

Adoption disenfranchised me from my birth culture and redirected my childhood in a social circle and lifestyle that absolutely doesn’t match my personality or interests.

Without a true social village or genetic inheritance to pass on, I have accepted that there is no reason to sacrifice my life, raising and passing on that trauma to a child.
