WE ARE CHILDFREE

β€œIt’s hard enough just taking care of yourself half the time.”

Debra, 57, USA

Childfree Gen Xer here. I knew at age 16 I never wanted children despite all adults assuring me I would “change my mind once I was a bit older and met a nice man”.

I did have my share of relationships including marriage but never wavered on my decision on having kids. I firmly believe certain people are not cut out to be parents and I am one of those people. I simply can’t relate to infants or toddlers and feel uncomfortable around them.

Plus friends of mine who had kids constantly complained about never having enough time/money/energy etc to do anything but deal with the kids. It never seemed worth it to me. Plus it’s hard enough just taking care of yourself half the time.
